The best home business these days is one that you can do on the internet – not the one that your family and friends are trying to sell you.

How do you start a successful home business? Firstly the secret of success is perseverance, not to stop halfway through the business building process as so many people do. Stick to your business and persevere – you will see the rewards of the time and effort you’ve put in.

That is truly the biggest mistake that any entrepreneur can make. The sad part is that most give up on their home business just before all the money and rewards start to come in.

Follow these 8 steps before you start any home business. This will ensure that you succeed rather than just wasting your time and money.

1. Find an online home business
Online businesses tend to have the lowest start-up and running costs, highest ROI (return on investment) and profit in the shortest period of time.

2. Make sure it is a business that you don’t have to sell to your friends and family.
People don’t like to be sold to. Especially your friends and family. Find a home business where customers come to you.

3. Do your due diligence before you commit to any online business – there are a lot of scams out there.
This is very important and any good entrepreneur will know this. Don’t jump into any business before you have done all your homework.
Use the internet to do research on the business and try to find people that are actually in the business and ask them some questions.
You will save yourself a lot of time and money by doing proper due diligence.

4. Know in advance exactly what will be required from you.
Many business opportunities claim that you only have to work 1 hour per day and that you don’t need any skill. There is not a business out there that only requires 1 hour a day!
Most business opportunities also requires some kind of skill set or knowledge. Make sure what is required and make sure that you either have it or that you are willing and able to learn it. Also check if it will be easy to acquire the necessary skill sets.

5. Don’t make any commitments if you know that you don’t have the time and or skill required, you will only waste your time and money if you do.
The first question that you should ask yourself before you start any business is this : How much time do I have available to dedicate ?
Find out from the people in the business how much time they are dedicating. If you know that you cannot do at least the same time, don’t start the business at all.

6. Give yourself a trial period of at least 12 months – work your home business for at least 12 months before you jump to another idea.
Biggest mistake most people make when starting a new business is to jump from the one opportunity to the next. The grass always looks greener on the other side, always!
After you have done your due diligence start your business and work it for at least 12 months. If after 12 months you realise that this is not for you, only then should you think of changing your business.

7. Remember it can take 3 – 5 years for a business to be profitable.
Once again, don’t give up before at least 12 months and don’t expect to make millions of dollars before your business is active for about 3 – 5 years.

8. Setup a business plan and stick to it.
You won’t go to gym without a daily program with targets. Do the same for your business. Setup a business plan with timely goals and STICK TO IT for at least 12 months!
